Mission Statement
English Upscaled is committed to bridging the language gap for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in South Africa. In addition to private tuition, we offer CEFR‑aligned instruction using Cambridge One, delivered online by qualified educators.
Why It Matters
The English language is key to accessing education, employment, and healthcare in South Africa.
For hosting nations like South Africa, international obligations under the 1951 Refugee Convention & 1967 Protocol, the Global Compact on Refugees (2018), and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (2018) require practical measures that ensure dignity, integration, and opportunity for displaced communities.
Source nations also carry responsibilities: to safeguard the rights of their citizens abroad, to cooperate with host countries, and to support reintegration for returnees. Both hosting and source governments are expected to demonstrate compliance with these frameworks in their annual reporting and international engagements.
English Upscaled provides a direct, solution‑based pathway to meet these obligations. By equipping migrants and refugees with English language proficiency, our program strengthens integration, reduces vulnerability, and offers governments and partners tangible evidence of compliance with UN commitments.
Our Impact Goals
- 100 learners in Year 1
- Deliver 36 structured lessons per level on average plus exercises, tests, and revisions
- CEFR‑level proficiency benchmarks
- Certification pathways for employability and recognition
- Scalable digital delivery for broader reach
Funding Needs
Our tuition‑based model ensures every rand is tied to actual services rendered:
- R200 per hour per student
- 45 hours per student per level per year
- R9,000 per student annually
- R900,000 total for 100 students in Year 1
This model guarantees transparency: each contribution directly funds lessons, assessments, and certification pathways. Funding needs are based on projected student figures and fee structures as of January 2025.
